Honte Chôshi 本手調子
Honte Chôshi is pure concentration on the breathing and is in fact the original version of other pieces that serve as preludes. They are played to establish a connection between the musician and the instrument as well as to evoke deep concentration. As an expression of the spirit of the koten honkyoku («the old transmitted pieces») Honte Chôshi helps in finding the tonality and in centering the musician. Many masters say: «If one is only capable of mastering this piece, one can understand the essence of the old transmitted pieces.»
